How to Fix the “A DNS Entry Already Exists” Error
When adding a domain or subdomain, you may see this error:
Error: (XID zqe8ct) A DNS entry for “blog.ilovewhc.com” already exists. You must remove this DNS entry from this server or all servers in the DNS cluster to proceed.
This means a system setting for that domain already exists on the server, and it needs to be removed—or adjusted—before the domain can be added again.
Why this happens
This error usually appears for one of these reasons:
- The domain was previously added and not fully removed.
For example, you may have used this domain before and deleted it, but some system settings are still saved. - The domain is already assigned to another hosting plan.
If the domain is still linked to an active service, even if it’s not visible in your current interface, it can block re-adding it. - Some background settings (DNS records) still exist.
Even if the domain isn’t visible in your control panel, leftover technical settings can cause a conflict.
Resolution
For Web Hosting, WordPress Hosting, or Reseller plans
- Log in to cPanel
- Open the Zone Editor under the Domains section.
- Look for the domain or subdomain that’s causing the error.
- If a DNS record (such as an A or CNAME record) exists:
- If it's no longer needed, delete it.
- If it's still in use but needs to be updated, make the necessary changes instead.
Important: Changing or removing DNS records may affect your website, email, or other services. Only make changes if you're sure the record is no longer required or is incorrect. When in doubt, contact our support team.
For Cloud, Dedicated, or VPS hosting with root access
- Log in to WHM.
- Go to DNS Functions > Edit DNS Zone.
- Select the domain or subdomain from the list.
- Look for the conflicting DNS record (such as an A or CNAME record).
- If it's outdated or incorrect, update or remove it as needed.
- Save the changes and try adding the domain again.
- If the DNS zone is no longer needed or can't be corrected:
- Go to DNS Functions > Delete a DNS Zone, select the domain, and click Delete.
Important: Deleting a DNS zone removes all records for the domain, including website and email settings. Only do this if you're sure it's safe. If you're using a DNS cluster, ensure the entry is removed across all servers.
