My Domain Name Got Renewed Without My Consent
Introduction to domain renewals
Domain renewal is the process of extending the registration period of a domain name to ensure it remains under your ownership. When you initially register a domain, you typically secure it for a specific period, usually ranging from one to ten years. As the expiration date approaches, you'll need to renew the domain to maintain control over it and prevent it from becoming available for others to purchase.
Renewing your domain is crucial, especially if it’s tied to your brand, business, or personal identity. If a domain expires, it may enter a grace period where the owner can still renew it, but after this period, the domain could be released to the public, potentially being purchased by someone else.
Understanding Auto-Renewal
Auto-renewal is a feature provided by Web Hosting Canada that automatically extends the registration period of your domain name 5 days before it expires. This ensures that you don’t accidentally lose ownership of your domain due to an oversight or missed expiration date.
In addition to the auto-renewal feature, Web Hosting Canada actively keeps you informed about the status of your domain. Emails are sent 45 to 30 days before the expiry date to remind you that your domain is approaching its renewal date.
These reminders ensure that you are always aware of the upcoming expiration and have ample time to make any necessary arrangements or updates to your payment information. Along with these notifications, invoices are also issued well in advance, providing a detailed breakdown of the renewal fees and the specific services being extended.
To make sure auto-renewal is active for your domain name on your account:
- Auto renewal has to be enabled from your Client Area
- An active credit card must be registered on your account
