Connect your Domain to Office 365 Email

This article will guide you through connecting your domain to Office 365 email system.

Before starting, please ensure that:

  1. You have an active domain or hosting product with WHC
  2. You have an Office365 email account
  3. You have verified your domain with Office 365

To get started, access the Zone Editor and follow the instructions below:

Changing the 8 DNS Records to Setup Office 365

There will be a total of 8 DNS settings to change in Zone Editor.

  • 1 MX record for emails
  • 4 CNAME records
  • 1 TXT record for spam filtering
  • 2 SRV records

1 MX record

To add the MX record you will need to

  1. Click on Add record
  2. Fill in the record as follows
    • Name = yourdomain.com. (i.e. the domain you wish to have verified with a period at the end)
e.g. if your domain was whc.ca then you would write whc.ca.
    • TTL= 3600
Time to live (TTL) is a mechanism that limits the amount of time in between updates of a computer or network. The number represents time in seconds. Thus, 86400 = 1 day, 14400 = 4 hours, 3600 = 1 hour. There are disadvantages to having the time lapse be too short or two long. Accordingly, it is best to set a TTL to the recommended time.
    • Type = choose MX
    • Priority = 0 (i.e as in the number zero)
    • Record = yourdomain-com.mail.protection.outlook.com

yourdomain.com= the domain your are trying to set up. Please note that you will need to place a hyphen (-) in between your domain name and domain extension.

For example, if whc.ca was the designated web address, then it would be ‘whc-ca.mail.protection.outlook.com’
  3. Click on Add record

Congratulations! You’ve Made the DNS Changes for Office 365

These DNS changes should take about 15 minutes to an hour to activate, though some systems may require 24 hours for the information to propagate. After 24 hours, contact your provider for more details.

To finalize the process, go back to the Office 365 domain section to verify if all the settings are configured correctly. Once you click verify, a screen should appear that indicates that all records were created successfully.

If there is an issue, Microsoft will prompt you on how to repair it. You can also check the troubleshoot sections of this article located at the end of their respective instructions.
