How to Change my Domain's Nameservers

Nameservers are the address books of the Internet and a critical part of what makes DNS work. They determine which servers contain your email forwarding & routing information.

Want to learn more about how this works? See our Beginner's Guide to DNS and Nameservers.

If your domain name is registered with Web Hosting Canada, you may change your domain's DNS (also called nameservers) by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your Client Area
  2. Click on Domains > My Domains
  3. If you have more than one domain, click on the domain you wish to manage
  4. In the Nameservers section, click on Edit
  5. Select Use my domain with a WHC service (recommended). Or you can select Use custom nameservers (advanced) to add your nameservers manually
  6. Choose your service from the dropdown box
  7. Click Apply changes

If you’re using the old client area

  1. Log in to your Client Area
  2. Click on Domains > My Domains
  3. If you have more than one domain, click on the domain you wish to manage
  4. Click on Manage Nameservers
  5. Click on Change Nameservers
  6. Select Use my domain with a WHC service (recommended). Or you can select Use custom nameservers (advanced) to add your nameservers manually
  7. Choose your service from the dropdown box
  8. Click Apply changes

Please note..

The changes will be submitted immediately but may take up to 24 hours to propagate online across all networks.

Any incorrect changes to your nameservers can disrupt access to your website, email, and other web services, so proceed with caution!

The DNS you should use will depend on your service and are generally communicated to you in your service's welcome email.

Please consult: What Are Your DNS (or Nameservers)? to learn which nameservers to use for which services.

If you wish to change the DNS for a domain name that is registered with a different provider, please contact your domain name provider directly or perform the change from their online system, if they provide one.
